Whittakers is dedicated to getting their ingredients fairly, having a Fairtraide certificate for two of their most popular 250g blocks. They are members of the World Cocoa Foundation, dedicated to growing sustainable cocoa economies that benefit society.

Whittakers support their local community. They started up in Porirua and support the Porirua Youth awards to reward inspirational, hard-working, talented and visionary young people.

They also care about the our Pacific family. They have been receiving cocoa from Samoa back in the 1960s and are committed to helping improve the cocoa quality for the whole industry, helping to start the Whittaker’s Cocoa Improvement Programme.

Renewable energy supporters. They choose to be supplied energy for their business use from Meridian energy, who are dedicated to producing 100% renewable energy.

They also use their chocolate for good, giving it away for worthy causes such as charities, schools and other organisations for raising funds.

They support ‘Kiwis for kiwi’. A charity committed to growing the population of our native bird

First character idea
I first thought about designing a cow character, as chocolate is a dairy product.

Bunny concept
I then thought about a bunny which could be a linked to easter, being a busy chocolate period

Fantail concept
I thought about having a native bird, but not the Kiwi as Whittakers already made have some products that use the kiwi

Final concept and context
I chose the cow as my final character as I felt it had stronger ties to chocolate than the other two concepts. I made the hero pose the cow eating a bar of chocolate wearing gumboots, to give it a New Zealand look

Rational

I chose to create a cow as the mascot/character for whittakers chocolate. I chose this over other options like a bunny, fantail and a kiwi, because chocolate is a dairy product and I noticed that
Whittakers already had special products with kiwis in mind.

My Cow is round and smiling as to be friendly and inviting. Its hero pose shows hiteating and enjoying a bar of chocolate. I wanted to give the character a bit of ‘New Zealand’ flavour so i gave it
gumboots.

As Whittakers are a charitable company, and often supply chocolate for charaties, schools and fundraisers, I wanted to put my character on the chocolate blocks. These would be special wrappers for these fundraising/charatiy situations. School fundraising situations would be the most ideal for this as the character is very cartoonish in its style.
